A/S/L?

We have been doing some last minute things around the house before leaving, and Andy and I were talking about the website's traffic.  We're able to tell the location of visitors, but not who they are.  We got a visit from France the other day!  Oh la la!

So this has struck our curiosity.  We have a frequent Ames visitor, and other various visitors that we can't place.  Some are easy: the early morning daily checks are Mom and Dad, the .uihc.stuff.something is Kelsey or Carrie from the University.  But some of the others leave us pondering.  So, here is our request: at the bottom of this post is a comment area.  We'd like to know who you are!  We'd like to see who are visitors are, and who our Ames friend is (we can guess and match the other people to places, but Ames is killing us!).  Pretty easy, just name and place.  And we'll see what we've got!

Maui's Haleakala Volcano, our biking experience!  I can't wait!!!

That's right, Chalupas.net will be on vacation for a bit.  We're packing up and heading to beautiful Maui and Oahu, on the Hawaiian islands.  We are pretty excited!  We'll be biking down an active volcano, attending a true Hawaiian luau, visiting Pearl Harbor, exploring the Honolulu Zoo, feasting like true Hawaiians, and hanging out on the beach like lazy bums.  It will be great!  The only draw back is that Carter isn't going.  A long, long flight + 10 months old = not good.  She will be staying with her rad godfather, Andy Haning, and her wonderful grandparents.  It'll be tough to be without her, but we're very excited to go.

I'm sure she'll be okay without us.  This afternoon, she was being held by her godfather.  He was getting ready to leave and passed her off to me.  As soon as she was with me and he proceeded to leave, she started to cry and reach out for him.  Oh yeah ... she can't wait for us to leave!  She's ready for a vacation of her own!

Please visit www.andyhaning.com for Carter's vacation updates.  You can also witness the decline of Andy's sanity through his first parental experience!  It should be fun!  Check back later for some fun Hawaii updates!  See you soon!  Aloha!

Packing sucks!  And this is just Carter's stuff!  Ooo-eee-vay!

Happy Birthday, Andy: part 2

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

Andy is a child, and could not wait for his birthday present!  So, he got to open it early.  What do you get for the Daddy who has everything?  Carter and I got him a leaf blower, and he was pretty excited!  He had some help opening his gift ... shocking, I know!

The Great Daddy, trying to predict what it is.  He had it narrowed down to "something round, that's used outside."  He's good!

Carter helped with the card and paper

After presents, it was nap time.  What better way to get ready for a nap:

Blue's Clues!  It's hypnotic to Carter.  She's attentive, quiet and engrossed in this cartoon!  It's 30 minutes of a little peace!  We love Joe and Blue!

Emergency Pediatrics Care

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

Today, at 10 months, we had our first emergency room visit.  I guess that it's a small blessing that we've made it to this point without having had a prior visit.  It did not make it less scary, though.

On a "typical" Saturday morning, Carter will begin to chat to herself and her toys around 6:30am, and will eventually give us a holler around 7:15am.  Andy and I will go and get her, and she'll smile at us, sit up, crawl to the bars of the crib and climb up to see us.  We change her while she hoots, jibber-jabbers, and chatters, and squirms, and then we eat breakfast.

Today, Andy went to get her, and she didn't make any attempt to move towards him.  He squatted next the crib to get to eye level with her, and she just laid there.  Her breathing was odd: like she was holding her breath, letting out a pant, then holding again.  And when she did breath normally, it was very loud and very fast.  Her eyes were gunky and her nose was runny and crusty, and she was on fire.  We took her temperature and it registered 100.5, 101.2, 101.1, all high for her.  She cuddled and held on to which ever one of us held her, and this is her "high activity time," and we knew she wasn't right.

She continued to have odd breathing patterns and was burning up, so we packed up and headed to Blank's Children's Hospital emergeny room in Des Moines.  She cried on the way there, but would try and smile for me.  It was heartbreaking.

They checked her in, checked her weight and normal body things.  The doctor dug two huge, disgusting balls of wax out of both ears (PU-KE!), and checked her ears and throat, which were both okay.  During all of this, she did great.  She nearly fell asleep during her wax excavation, and cried just because she was uncomfortable.  The nurse gave her some motrine (orange, yum!) and then we took a couple x-rays of her chest.  She wasn't happy about it, but did okay.

After our worrying and all the checking, she appears to be just running a fever.  She gets baby motrine and liquids until she's back to normal.  Andy and I discussed our thoughs on the emergency room: I would rather them roll their eyes at me, send me with some motrine, and think that I'm overprotective than to sit at home and let her get over it on her own.  I have 0 medical knowledge, except what I've gleaned from ER which is very little, and I would rather be "safe than sorry."  Having to live with myself after we'd sat at home, letting her be sick and upset, would kill us.  I will go into the ER a hundred times over if that's what I think is necessary for Carter to be healthy.  I can safely say that I don't feel we're "overprotective" because I can balance this with the "freedom" she has: she goes with us everywhere, restaurants, friends, shopping, the only rules of the house are ones to proect her: no knives and don't eat the ants.  Carter has the freedom to do nearly anything her creative mind and think of, and as parents, it's our job to make sure her "creative mind" stays healthy and happy.  So, by the time she's 18, there'll probably be a worn and beaten path between us and the hospital.  And we're okay with that.

Happy Birthday, Andy!

We celebrated Andy's birthday this evening in true style: we we're "T'ed" off!  We went mini golfing at Putt Masters, between Ankeny and Johnston.  This was the hardest, most God-awful mini golf course in the history of the game!  The edges just dropped off into the grass, some holes were raised so the balls would circle out and away, and there were these disgusting, loud frogs in the pond.  Eww!  But it was a beautiful evening with our awesome friends, so it was fun.  We kept two score cards, and I tallied our half: Andy = 42, Tim = 52, Haning = 62, and Kelly = 72.  I totally won with high score!   We also had dinner at Chili's, where else?!  And we capped it off with Tim's favorite: TETRIS!  It was a blast, and Andy is almost one year older ... but not as old as Jon and Tim!

I know it's mini golf, but come on!  Look at my form and swing!  I'm just too awesome for this course!

Tim, Andy, Stacy, Dave and Jon prepare to tee off at hole #1

Now, now, Andy ... just because Andy is better than you is no reason to severe his limbs ... that's not nice ...

This is hole #3: 7 tiny balls aiming for a small hole, being swung at by a monsterous 4x4 ... like I've got a chance ...

Kelly & Andy: the Jack Nichelson & Tiger Woods of mini golf!

Happy birthday to my favorite birthday boy in the world!

When they're not at each other's throats, Andy and Tim are actually pretty sweet!

Things that big girls do

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Carter is 10 months old now, and she is the leader of the baby pack.  She is old, wise, and mature.  She talks with her turtle, for heavens sakes!  Because she is so big, and well behaved, and good (and someone from Daddy's work screwed up and Daddy had to stay and help fix it!), Carter got to go to the "big girl" party at Stacy's tonight.  Carter and I went to the Tastefully Simple party Stacy was hosting.  If you are unfamiliar with Tastefully Simple, it's a company that sells soup bases, cookie and bread mixes, and spices that are magically transformed into happiness and deliciousness!  Even I can cook with this stuff - amazing, I know!  There were about a dozen people there, and Carter knew Haning, Amy, Stacy, and Dave and Jon (who "geeked out" in the basement), and enjoyed meeting the other guests.  Carter also got to sample some yummy things: bread, pretzels, and some fabulous desserts!  Being a "big girl" has its privileges!

Carter and I played outside in our backyard retreat this evening.  It is honestly the best place on Earth!  She is getting better about moving around in the grass.  She seems to have gotten used to the dying, prickly grass.  She has a routine now: we situation ourselves in a shady area, she surveys the grass, and goes in search of the leave of choice.  She finds the leaf, and she tries to sneak it into her mouth.  Of course, she always gets caught, but she will always try again!  She is addicted to leaves, seeds, and grass!  I enjoy chocolate, chips, and pop - I guess we all have our own vices!

"What a delicious tree leaf"

"Here Mom, try it, you'll like it!  Maybe if you try it, and do like it, you'll let me eat them ..."

Carter's addiction: leaves, seeds, and grass.  Is there a 12 step program for this?

On the prowl for more goodies!  How could you not love this sweet, little herbivore?!?

Carter helped with dinner tonight!  She played "dinner music" on the pots with a wooden spoon and magnet while I cooked.  Who knew dinner could be so educational?  She is the next Mozart.

"Daddy!  I don't wanna swim!  It's cold!"

"If I cry and look like I'm in pain, can I get out?"

"NO DADDY!  It does not help if you hug me!  I'm cold!  And you aren't making me warmer!"

"I just wanna go inside and play with A-Duh!  I hate the pool!"

Celebration in Brass

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

Celebration in Brass is the best thing in the world!  I love it!  As a Des Moines Register writer says, "Some of the best young musicians in the United States will gather in Ankeny next week for a prestigious drum and bugle corps competition.

The 24th annual Celebration in Brass, presented by the Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ankeny High School stadium. Bev Albaugh of the chamber said six drum and bugle corps will participate this year.

Celebration in Brass is part of the Summer Music Games, a series of drum and bugle corps competitions across the country under the umbrella of Drum Corps International, said Michael Cravens, chairman of the Celebration in Brass organizing committee. The series culminates in the World Championships at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis., in August."

It is awesome!  6 marching bands from all over the midwest pack up all their gear and travel the country all summer, playing music and performing.  It is awesome!  The first two groups sucked (they were little; a group from division 1 and division 2, little corps), but the last four rocked my socks!  It was awesome!

The Colts were on it and didn't miss a note, step, or flag twirl!

While Andy, Tim, Andy and I celebrated the brass, two of our favorite babysitters - Amy and Jon - watched Carter.  She tried to climb the living room shelves and take down picture frames, but was otherwise good, fun, and cute!

Carter has been working on her driving skills.  Despite going a little askew and hitting the banister, end table, and Daddy, she's already a better driver that I am!  She started off Monday needing help to crawl to a standing position and then drive, but today's she's got it down.  She can get herself up to the handle, and take about 5 to 8 steps before she gets shakey and too far from the handle.  Then she "gracefully" sits down, and tries again!  I agree with the majority of chalupas.net readers: she will probably be taking her first indpendent steps before her 1st birthday.

Swimming: it's not meant to be

So it's been a wonderful day!  The sun is bright and shining, the sky a perfect blue.  But within the ten minutes it takes me to get Carter changed, into a swimmer and swimsuit, lather her up with lotion, and get a towel, the clouds have sovered the sun and the pool water is fridgid!  So pool attempt #2 went as well as attempt #1.  But, she's really cute, and enjoy just hanging out in the back yard with me!

Happy Father's Day!

What a fun first Father's Day!  Carter let us sleep in, and we had yummy egg bake breakfast.  Andy got his Dad's Day gifts - a smoker and some picture magnets for work - and we played all day!  We went to the park in the afternoon.  Carter loved the swing, and tried the big slide a few times.  Slide 1 and 2 were fun, slide 3 made her a little panicky, so that was the end of that!  We came home, called the best Grandparents in the world, and went to dinner at Outback, and ate so much that I was sure we'd pop!  It was a great Dad's Day!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to our outstanding Dads!  Carter is the best because you taught us to be the best!  We love you!

Chalupa Zoo Trip

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

In our Chalupa tradition, Andy, Brian, Kevin and Corey, and all of their awesome wives have taken a trip somewhere fun.  In 2003, we went to Chicago for a Cubs game.  In 2004, we went to Mexico for Kevin and Katie's wedding, and in 2005, fun came to us in Altoona as Corey and Amber got married.  This year, our plan was to go to the Blank Park Zoo with Carter and Courtney, but life got busy, and only half the Chalupa Clan could make it (so we'll have to make dinner plans for later in the summer to all be together!).

We got ready like we typically do: Carter slept in until about 7:15, she ate a healthy breakfast of oatmeal, bananas, and milk, played for a bit, and then got a bath.  She then streaked about the bedroom.  "She got away," Andy said, nonchantly.  Yeah ... and now she's running around naked ...

NAKED baby!

Brian and Anna and Courtney, who were camping at Red Rock near Pella, met us at the Zoo.  We'd gone from the entrance, passed the baboons and giraffe, and all Courtney and Carter saw was their cousin!  They started and smiled at one another like they'd been apart for too long!  Then, they finally noticed the giraffe and zebras.  Carter also loved the Serval, which looked a lot like a fat Sammy, and the goats, because she could pet them, like Sammy!  The girls finished their zoo trip with a break in the grass together.  When we sat them down, they instantly couldn't take their hands off one another!  Fingers pulling clothes, hands touching arms and legs, staring intently at one another!  It was the sweetest thing I've ever seen!  They played in the grass, and when one would find something interesting, the other would immediately be involved, examining and looking it over with her cousin.  Carter, like usual, put her fingers in Courtney's mouth, and our favorite "Michilin Baby" held her hand and gently (with her 2 teeth!) chewed on Carter's hand.  How adorable?!  We capped the day off with lunch (sandwiches for us, chicken noodle and veggies with grapes and juice for Carter, and greeny beanies and apple banana dessert with milk and a pickle for Courtney!) at Apple Bee's.  It was the best day at the Blank Park Zoo ever!  We are so very lucky to have the best daughter and the most precious niece in the world!  Courtney and Carter will soon be double-trouble!

Monkies, monkies, everywhere!  Courtney, with Anna and Brian, and Andy, Kelly and Carter, visited the Blank Park Zoo Saturday and had a wonderful time.  She and her cousin had a blast!  Courtney enjoyed the giraffe and the sea lion very much!  The girls had a great time together!

Happy Birthday, Jon & Josh!

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

To celebrate Jon and Josh being older than dirt, we went out for dinner and drinks and karoke.  We had BBQ at Woodee's BBQ in Waukee.  Now, I'm not generally a BBQ fan.  It's too barbaric for me to eat things from the bone.  But it was actually pretty good.  And not crowded, which is good when you're a loud and goofy party of ten!   After dinner, we moved on to Mickey's Irish Pub, which was also fairly quiet.  Jon, or George Pimberton or something!, signed up to karoke.  What a man!  We all said, "I'm gonna sing this one!" and made fun of the other women who sang off key, but Jon got up and sang his little heart out to ZZ Stardust (or something - I'm too young to know this band!  I think they're from Jon's youth ... 1963 or something??  JK!)  He did awesome!  We had some drinks, and read quality literature provided to us by Mickey's.  It was a good time with great friends!  And, when we return from Hawaii in July, we will go again and drink lots, and KAROKE our shorts off!  Woo hoo!

Happy Birthday, Pirate Jon!  Ahoy, matey!  I'm old!

And this is what we left at home:

Ashely, our sweet and adorable neighbor, babysit Carter while we went out.  Before we left, she had baked beans and bread, and mixed fruit for dinner.  As she was eating, she would rub her BBQ'ed hands through her hair.  I guess that's one method of styling your hair!  Not one I would recommend, however!

Manual Labor, also known as Slave Labor

I hate renovations!  They are a pain in my *ss (we do not say naughty words anymore - Chatterbox is starting to copycat sounds and tiny words.  I don't need her first word to be "ass" ... although it would be funny ... kind of ...).  First, it was the brick in the yard, which is almost finished (we found an extra row on the outer edge, tricky bastard bricks!).  So, I'm back to the laundry room.  So long ago, I started pulling up the vinyl flooring.  It's cracked, scratched, chipped, and just plain '80's gross!  It is a slow, stupid process: I have a little hand-held melter thing that honest to God could shoot flames!  I heat up one square at a time (I think there are 14,523,992 tiles, total) to the point of "melting," and use a putty knife to stab underneath it.  The tiles are actually melting, which creates this nice "my house is on fire" smoke that fills the laundry room.  I'm somewhat surprised that a neighbor hasn't come to check on me (I guess they really do hate me!), or that a fire alarm hasn't gone off (they probably don't have batteries anymore!).  I would say, on a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being totally easy and awesome and 10 being sheer h#ll, I'd say the bricks were a 5, and the tiles are a 4.5.  Remodeling blows!

The current flooring: cracked, scratched, chipped, and just plain '80's gross!  I want it gone!  Now!

My hand-held photon flame shooter.  I have been using its fire (that'd be the orange-red glowing area) to burn the tiles and glue (that would be the black charred area) and pry them off ... one at a time ...

Summertime - part 2

Watermelon, anyone?  I bet it's sweet!  And totally cheesy!  Carter and I played in the pool this afternoon.  Well, not so much "in."  It was a bit overcast, and the water got cold, quickly!  So she and I sat on the side, and she reached in to play.  Twice she put a little too much weight on the inflatable side, and it collasped on her, spilling cold water on her.  She was not pleased!  Afterwards, we had dinner (mac and cheese with ham, greeny beanies, and mixed fruit - all solid, table food!!) with some Kool-Aid.  And Carter got her first Kool-Aid mustache!  The first of many, I'm sure!!

Anything that makes a beep, bang, or buzz is something that Carter needs to have!  Life as she knows it will end without that item.  So, as usual, it was a necessity that she have my cell phone.  I'm not sure if she's calling the Chinese Embassy or some boy - either way, it makes me nervous!fone

Damn you, bicuspid

We fed Carter at her normal time this evening.  Afterwards, she was very fussy.  I assumed that the ravoli and cherries did not sit well.  Upon further investigation, it appears that Carter is cutting her first tooth!  You can see the tinest little sharp tip on her lower gumline.  It's adorable!  But looks very painful.  She's never been a fan of teething rings, but she loves her popsicles!

A World of Discovery

It's another yucky, cold day.  Daddy worked on the deck (all spindles and top rails are on!  Woo hoo!), and Carter and I went to the Science Center of Iowa.

 Wearing Daddy's work shoes

Getting ready to leave ... or messing around!

Now, I must confess: I have many favorites.  My favorite ice creams are cookie dough and mint chocolate chip.  My favorite colors are yellow and orange.  But my all time, favorite place in Des Moines is the Science Center.  It is the coolest thing since sliced bread!  Check out the website if I haven't enticed you enough:  http://www.sciowa.org/

"Discovery World for Babies & Toddlers:"  Carter explored the small tunnel ... and eluded me!

"Discovery World for Babies & Toddlers:" Carter was amazed when she would push the little pins!  She also liked the texture of them.  You can see by the look on her face that she is figuring this all out!

Bubbles travel fastest in which type of substance: watery, sugary, or very thick???
Ask Carter ... she's learning all about it!

One of our favorite exhibits was the ball and wind display.  When balanced, the wind centers the ball.  She liked the ball, and really liked the wind!

Carter is participating in the Lighten Up, Iowa! campaign by checking her weight.  About 18 pounds ... that's about the 50% for children her age ... I think you can have one more Cheerio at snack!

Today's been a drizzley, boring Saturday.  To jazz up the afternoon, I decided to get out the non-toxic, washable, kid-friendly paint so that Carter could play, finger paint ... maybe be the next Van Gogh.  Was I ever wrong!  She would grab the paper, try for the containers of paint, get painty and grab anything close, the only thing she refused to hold was the paint brush!  The single time she did hold the brush, I got a little too close and ended up with a green nose!  But, we had fun.  At the end of the day, the paint washes off, and the mess cleans up, but Carter and I will have a painting memory forever (or at least I will!).

Carter is not a fan of being limited and having boundaries.  As you can imagine, she's also not a fan of the baby gate!  After running around all of Friday - shopping, garage saling, trying new snacks and foods, and playing, Carter needed contained!  She was a crazy!  So, like always, we shut the gate for her safety.  She stood at the top of the stairs, chattering and giggling, and trying to get out of our "jail."  After snuggling with Daddy for a bit, she finally fell asleep, with her ballerina-bear from "God-Grandma Kris" Haning.  Isn't she sweet?!?

Solid foods: part 2

What a moose!

My parents came up, and were excited to see that Carter was starting solid foods (it is quite the show!).  We decided to have lunch at Hy-Vee, so that she could try a little of everything from the salad bar.  She loved it!  She tried nearly everything I'd shovel into her mouth, and enjoy the cottage cheese, cantalope, pasta and potato salad (finely mashed), ham, beets, and egg.  She did not enjoy the bean salad at all.  But, her favorite??  Oh yes, the famed chocolate pudding!  Heaven!

For snack, we tried grahams.  She had a couple ounces of formula and an entire graham cookie!  And she couldn't get enough!  She tried to pick the crumb up from her tray!

grahams

Because she was such a mess (look at those nasty, icky, sticky, little hands!  Gross!), she had spa night early.  Carter loves the water, so we've given up using her tub.  We put her in the bathtub, in fairly shallow water and let her splish and splash.  Lately, she's noticed the faucet, and is amazed by the water.  She gets really irritated that she can't hold the water, but continues to try and grab it!

Oh yeah ... that's good stuff ...

We're working to getting Carter off baby food and onto appropriate adult food.  We got a lunch menu from the Daycare, and there are many foods that she is able to handle.  That made us consider replacing her 9am and 3pm bottles with snacks, like adults!  We're going to give it a whirl this weekend, so Carter and I went to the store to get some snacks.  For her, we got grahams and vanilla wafers, which she LOVES, and some fat-free chocolate/vanilla pudding for me (cause I'm fat).  While she had her afternoon bottle and a little snack, I also had a snack.  Once she spotted the pudding, she was no longer interested in the grahams - duh!  Can you blame her?!?  Suddenly, "my" pudding became "our" pudding, and eventually ended as "her" pudding!  She smacked her lips, and loved up to me, just to get a little more.  Ahh ... she really is my daughter!

2 Yummy!  Mom's "100 Calorie Pack" Chocolate-'Nilla Pudding!

1 Wow, Moms!  Can I have another slobbery-bite???  Pretty please?!?

Seriously ... could you tell her no?!?  Look at that chocolate mug - I love it!

It's plastic money!

Andy, Carter, and I went to Chili's for dinner.  Yes, Carter got to eat part of both of our meals, as usual!  She enjoyed Andy's carrots, and my flatbread pita with a little ranch on it.  Eat up, guys, dinner's on Carter!

Being the nice and wonderful wife that I am, I volunteered to do my part to help with the deck.  After all, I'm "partially retired" until August 21, I could help out!  I can't measure for crap, and I power tools scare me, so I volunteered to work on the lower deck.  The old bottom deck was built on top of bricks (ingenious, I know), and the bricks need to be removed so that everything is level for Andy to build on top of.  Yeah, it sounds relatively easy, in theory, but is not!  I started Sunday, and worked about an hour and a half, then put in another 1 hour this morning.  It sucks ass!  There is about two inches of dirt, with growing grass, on top of each brick.  The bricks themselves are about 6 to 10 inches underground.  I dig and dig, then scrap with a trowel and fingers to get the bricks loose, and pry them out with the shovel.  And to make it worse, there are creepy-crawlies in the dirt!  I know - "Duh, Kelly, it's dirt!  What did you expect?!"  But I have come across the same centipede (yes, "centi-" meaning 100 disgusting, creepy, infested little legs!) about a dozen times.  And I have cut more than my share of fat, nasty nightcrawlers in half!  If it's true that nightcrawlers can reform their bodies and survive after being dismantled, I am screwed!  We'll have an army of pissed of worms in the back yard!  Eww!

After a long day of eating, cat-napping, crawling all over, eating some more, and playing with friends, Carter, Andy, and I played outside.  Carter loves the little clover-flowers ... loves to try and eat them!  She's quickly learning "no," and "no mouth."  She appears to understand, and listens ... about 70% of the time!

We played in the grass until Punky could take no more.  Exhaustion finally set in after the long day, and the yawning began!

As if just being able to manuever through the upstairs wasn't enough for us to handle.  Today, Carter tackled the first five stairs of the house.  No fear - she just started crawling up!  Andy was at the landing, and she wanted to see Dad.  She got up three steps, then reared backwards.  Luckily, I caught her.  The minor setback didn't phase her a bit: she smiled, turned, and started toward Daddy!

 Great ...

Later, Moms!  I'm out!

Andy, Tim and I, and Kristy (I hope it's Kristy with a Y!  Sorry if it's not!)and Carrie, friends of Tim's, met up for a night on the town.  We started at the Star Bar downtown.  I am a Star Bar newbie - I heart it lots!  It's a mix of kinda loud, kinda quiet, kinda smoky and dirty yet kinda clean.  I give it 3 (out of 4) stars).  The food was just okay for me: "really well done" doesn't not mean "a little pink" on the inside.  That part made me want to barf a little, but I managed.  The fries were really good, and the Comso, excellent!  Tim totally got his money's worth out of his "have splash of Coke with Rum" Rum and Coke!  Don't light a match, Tim will ignite!

From there, we went to The Garden.  This was also a new bar for me.  Now, I must confess a story from my past.  In high school, I had this crush/relationship deal with a guy named Cory.  He was an okay guy, but some bad stuff went down, and we haven't spoken since then.  I've heard through high school friends that he's been in Arizona and Oregon or something, I don't know.  Over Gay Pride week, in 2002, Kelsey, her mom Teresa, and their good, gay friend KB, and I went to Studio 13 for the Drag Queen show to support Gay Pride.  We were having a good time, dancing, talking, watching the show.  I noticed a couple guys making out, and then realized that one of the was the afore-mentioned Cory.

That being said, gay establishments do not shock me.  After that, little does.  Gay bars are actually pretty sweet: everyone is super nice, the music is good and loud, and it's a blast.  At straight bars, everyone's looking to get lucky, and it's gross.  I could have walked into The Garden stark-naked, and none of the guys would have even looked twice!  It's awesome!

Anyway, we had a couple drinks (sidebar: Sex on the Beach at The Garden = bad news.  It tasted like what I image the inside of a toilet would taste like!  Gross!), danced, watched the Drag Queen Show, and met some neat, new people:  "Todd DSM" and "Nutt-sack Jeff."  Both were very nice, and seemed like good guys.  They lived up to what I'd heard about them - the good things and the odd things!

Andy had a few too many drinks, and barfed by some van on the way out.  And Kristy and Carrie's cab never did come.  Other than that, the night was awesome!  I had a blast, and look forward to going again!

Grant and Collin Bumsted are doing awesome!  Collin's an eater, and Grant isn't exactly starving, so a brave Mom and Dad have started rice cereal.  Collin took to it like a champ, but Grant was slow to warm up to it.  Now?  Old pro's!  They are 100% cute, and total buddies!

Grant (L) and Collin (R), already picking on one another!

Oh, isn't being mobile fun?!?  Two months ago, I could not wait for Carter to crawl and walk!  I was sure she's crawl to me and hug me, and we'd play all day!  It would be swell!  ... not likely!  Now that she's crawling, she's into everything!  In our living room, she literally has a bazillion toys (yes, literally, I counted yesterday), and she goes around all the neat items to go climb that garbage can!  I tell her no, she looks at me like she understands, yet continues to climb, waiting to see what I'll do.  Today, my reaction was to move her back to the chairs by the window to play with me.  We did the chair-to-garbage can, "no Carter," and move back to the chairs about four times, when I decided enough was enough.  Every child needs limits, so Carter received her first time out.  Yeah ... you can image how well that went over!  Dr. Phil says that a normal 2 year old child should be put in time out for 2 minutes, and as that child grows older, he or she should remain in time out for a number of minutes equal to his or her age.  That means Carter should have been in time out for about 9 seconds, which was my plan.  Just long enough for her to understand that no means no.  Instead, she threw a nasty tanrum!  When I went back in (10 seconds later, mind you), she was red, screaming that God-awful howl of hers!  I picked her up, changed and put her jammies on, all while she continued to scream and kick and pound her fists on anything she could reach.  By the end of it all, I was more upset than her!

However, in our day, we have mastered the art of pulling ourself from a sit to a stand on the banister.  Look out, young Japanese children ... Godzilla is coming!  She's also getting the hang of feeding herself a bottle.  It's the tipping and tilting part that gets her!

She might be absolutely terrible (and there's no way she is!), but one look at her and I melt!  How could you be mad at her for long?!?
